X-PSP Phosphor plate scanner: what you need to know

NewTom X-PSP is a CR (Computed Radiography) system that provides all the advantages of digital diagnostics without altering the usual routines of the dental practice.

In just a few seconds, the X-PSP reader imports and digitalizes the phosphor plate scanner images, allowing them to be displayed on the PC or iPad and shared with the patients. Automatisms simplify and speed up the reading and storage processes, while Hi.Res technology provides high definition images with perfect contrast.

The main advantage of a phosphor plate scanner

Phosphor plate scanners provide all the comfort and practicality of dental films and do not involve any learning on the part of users. However, they have the advantage of being reusable, and images can be displayed quickly and directly in digital format. This streamlines workflows while saving on materials and processing costs.

How do phosphor plate scanners work?

Thin, flexible and non-invasive, phosphor plate scanners come in 4 sizes, from the smallest for paediatric applications to those for periapical, bitewing and long bitewing images. The active area covers 100% of the overall surface area; moreover, ultra-sensitive performance provides highly detailed images (pixel size 30μm) with minimum X-ray doses. Each plate consists of a phosphor layer and a magnetic layer, which speeds up the process thanks to an automatic sequence start.

High resolution images

The X-PSP system provides high resolution images, making it the perfect tool for endodontics, prostheses and implant surgery, periodontics and caries diagnosis. What’s more, innovative Apt (Adaptive Picture Treatment) filters, which use proprietary algorithms for the phosphor plate scanners, provide a set of (up to 5) images with every scan, with improvements that highlight anatomical details at different levels of sharpness

A highly dynamic system and automatic correction of any over- or under-exposure minimise the risk of having to re-scan.

Workflow with phosphor plate scanner

The X-PSP system features a fast, 4-stage workflow:

  1. positioning/acquisition;
  2. reader reservation and scanning;
  3. viewing;
  4. sharing and storing.

By inserting the plates in the reader one at a time, the images are captured and transferred to the local PC and/or sent to the client who reserved the reader. They’re then immediately ready to be consulted, shared and stored (with NNT software or other viewers), printed or e-mailed.

All the user has to do is insert the plate in the reader. The plate is, in fact, extracted from its protective wrapping inside the reader itself, shielding it from any exposure to light or hand contact. Moreover, self-adaptive Auto-Read technology automatically recognises the size of the inserted plate, imports the image onto the PC and deletes the data from the plate itself, ensuring it’s ready for the next scan.

Adaptive Multi-User Technology (aMUT)

The aMUT function is particularly useful in dental practices that have two or more rooms. This lets you control the reader remotely via an ethernet connection and book it directly from the workstation next to the patient chair. The patient name is assigned, as is the colour associated with the specific room. An application available in iCapture automatically saves scanned images in the patient's medical records, ensuring they’re immediately available on the surgery monitor.

Phosphor plate scanner connectivity

X-PSP interfaces with the main dental surgery management software solutions using various standard VDDS, TWAIN or proprietary modes such as NNTBridge. It also communicates with RIS/PACS systems and DICOM printers. Users can share scan results with patients and colleagues by providing the image and the relative viewer on CD, DVD or USB key.

Other significant advantages:

  • Multi-station storage: images are immediately saved on a shared database, accessible from any workstation. Access to the database is password protected.
  • Remote assistance: X-PSP can be configured, via the practice’s internet connection, to access NewTom remote monitoring and technical assistance services.

Smart design

The X-PSP phosphor scanner is small and compact. It can be wall mounted using a special bracket, or placed on a worktop. The 45° angle aids plate insertion in any position. The removable drawer allows for easy collection and transportation of the just-used plates, which can be stored - once sterilized - in a practical organizer.

Ergonomic, with a full array of procedure-optimizing features and automatisms, X-PSP fits seamlessly into the practice's workflow. Once again, NewTom’s unrivalled know-how has resulted in the design of a practical high-tech instrument that enhances treatment efficiency.
